“We Lost Our Car..”– Now Boasting a $300 Million Fortune, Gerard Pique’s Ex Shakira Once Recounted ‘Financial’ Struggles That Galvanized Her Success

Shakira, a world-renowned pop star and Latin powerhouse is now worth an impressive total of $300 million. Having started her career at an early age, the 46-year-old has built a worldwide fan base with her incredible music over the years. She has, however, been embroiled in controversy and drama ever since her much-publicized split from her long-time boyfriend and father of her two children, Gerard Pique in June 2022.

This has created numerous dramatic headlines but did not stop Shakira from releasing yet another hit song. Her diss track, ‘Bzrp Music Session #53’ at Pique resulted in a further $2.5 million increase to her substantial net worth.

Even though Shakira is unquestionably enjoying all of her wealth at the moment, things were not always like that. Despite experiencing a very different life now, Shakira once admitted to financial struggles when she was a child, which also inspired her to succeed.

Shakira faced a “financial crisis” growing up

Talking in a candid interview in 2009, Shakira recounted her tough upbringing and the moment that drove her to success. She revealed, “When I was eight years old, my dad underwent an economic crisis, a financial crisis. You know, he lost his business, and we struggled economically for many years”.

The Colombian singer then went on to share a story saying, “We lost our car, we lost our furniture. And I remember vividly the day I walked in my house and all the furniture was gone because my dad had to pay his debts. And it was quite well, shocking for me”.

She further added, “I was eight, seven, eight years old, and when I saw this, I was so frustrated. And my dad, I’m so upset with my parents because I couldn’t understand how they did so poorly in business. I’m like, why, why? I couldn’t get it”.

8-year-old Shakira could not believe at the time how things could have gone down so badly. Nonetheless, what came after served as a huge inspiration and life lesson to her.

‘The Queen of Latin Music’ soon had an eye-opener

In the wake of seeing young Shakira’s response, her parents William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado attempted to teach a truly valuable lesson to her. They took Shakira to a park where there were some orphans.

“And my dad and my mom took me to the park, where they showed me other kids my age sniffing glue,” Shakira recalled. “They were orphans. They had no one to watch after them, and they were barefoot, and they were abandoned to their own luck”.

This eye-opener scene triggered her internal drive to succeed. “And it probably left such an impression in my impressionable mind at that age that I remember that day, and I remember that I made myself a promise. I said I said to myself, Shakira, you have to succeed,” concluded the Popstar.

Following that the rest is just history. Shakira channeled all this into motivation for success. She soon became popular in Latin America and eventually gained international fame.
