The USWNT started their World Cup campaign aiming for a three peat. However, they could not show their mettle and championship pedigree at the group stage and struggled their way to the next round. Throwing things further out of the kilter, Sweden knocked the defending champions out in penalty shootout as the soccer world watched in shock. Aggravating the fall, the team’s centerpiece Megan Rapinoe failed to find the back of the net from the spot. Shortly after the heart-breaking exit, ace striker Alex Morgan sounded off her disappointment at the result.

During the crucial game, Alex Morgan came so close to netting a goal. However, Sweden’s Zecira Musovic stood in her way. Following the exit, Alex Morgan was in tears, citing her team had to go home, despite giving their all on the field.

After the penalty shootout and the subsequent shocking result, Alex Morgan spoke to Fox Soccer’s Jenny Taft. “Feels like a bad dream. I don’t know, the team put everything out there. I think we dominated, but doesn’t matter. It’s the highs and lows of the sport of soccer. Doesn’t feel great,” said Alex Morgan.

During the post-game interview, Morgan was also asked what the team, along with the coach Vlatko Andanovski, spoke to each other after the shootout was over. Morgan replied she couldn’t hear much because of the crowd and added, “I couldn’t hear anything but my own thoughts.” Her response doesn’t come as a surprise as she, like most of her teammates, was struck by the sadness of facing such an early exit. Furthermore, Morgan revealed that she has now only got thoughts about returning to her NWSL side San Diego Wave, perhaps aiming to forget a disappointing World Cup run.
