Moments ago, Inter Miami kicked off its 2024 MLS season against Real Salt Lake. In a surprising turn of events, Lionel Messi and Co. have clinched an easy 2-0 victory in their opening game. While fans must be pleased with the performance as they stole the crucial three points, Tata Martino is still not convinced, as he asserts that Miami ‘should’ve scored one more goal.’

A 39th-minute strike from Robert Taylor via Messi’s assist and an 83rd-minute goal from youngster Diego Gomez, set up by Luis Suarez, was enough to win the game. Yet, it seems Tata Martino is a hard man to impress. During the press conference, when asked about his team’s victory against Real Salt Lake, he replied, “Well, [in] the first half, we had a good game. We didn’t suffer in defense. We should’ve scored one more goal.” This is quite a huge claim, considering the numbers Inter Miami produced during the match.

David Beckham‘s soccer franchise did a good job throughout the game, maintaining 55% possession and 84% pass accuracy. They also took a total of 15 shots, 2 fewer than Real Salt Lake. While the Florida-based club had 8 on target, the defense line also deserves a pat on the back, as the Utah side just had 2. Yet, it seems that Tata Martino wants his side to stay pitch-perfect; ergo, the evident dissatisfaction despite tonight’s victory. Additionally, he also wouldn’t want the team to become complacent after the recent win.

With just one win, Tata Martino was questioned about whether Inter Miami was the favorite to lift the MLS Cup. However, the manager quickly played down the sentiments. He succinctly replied, “Don’t jump the gun, it’s just one game. We’re going to continue to work on what we showed in the first half. There are still some things that have to be corrected.”

Evidently, Martino is not interested in counting all the chickens before they hatch. He may be alluding to the second half’s defensive errors. Inter Miami got more opportunities than they would have liked because the defense was disorganized. Either way, let’s hope they can sort things out, and also, tonight’s victory is the first of many for Inter Miami.
