Lionel Messi has reportedly said no to signing the contract extension with PSG. This means that Lionel Messi will be a free agent soon. Many teams are waiting to grab the generational talent, however, only a few can afford to sign the world cup winner. Lionel Messi left Barcelona after being the backbone for 17 years. However, Messi got a very big number from PSG and a chance to play with his former teammate, Neymar. However, PSG wasn’t the only team that tried to sign the Argentinian magician.

The past few years have been turbulent for soccer fans. From whatever happened between Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo to the new-age Barcelona. However, what only a few fans know is that they were very close to seeing Lionel Messi in Serie A.

Zanetti talked about trying to sign Lionel Messi

When Lionel Messi entered the summer window as a free agent, teams lined up to shoot their shot and sign the great player. However, it all became clear that only a few teams can afford to even think about this plan. Signing Lionel Messi is a monumental task financially, and as a result, only a few select clubs could afford to do so. As such, PSG tapped into its pile of cash and signed the future world cup winner to their roaster.

Argentinian legend and vice President of Inter Milan Javier Zanetti talked about how they were planning to make some moves to sign Messi, but couldn’t because of budget issues. He said, “We spoke to Messi because of the relationship we have when there was this possibility that he would leave Barcelona. I would never have imagined his farewell to Barcelona. But we cannot realistically compete, from an economic point of view, with teams like [Manchester] City or Paris Saint Germain.”

PSG is eying to win the UEFA championship. They are top contenders for the trophy, as the team consists of 3 powerhouses of soccer. A team that has Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Sergio Ramos presents serious threats to other teams.

Messi might come to the states

If everything works out, USA fans might witness Lionel Messi playing in MLS. This move has been on the table even before the World Cup. However, knowing that it is very unlikely that Messi will sign the extension, this plan might become a reality sooner than fans had hoped.
