Is the 6-point reduction for drone spying too harsh on Canada Soccer, or is it justified?

Right now, things aren’t looking great for the Canadian soccer fans. After the whole mess with the women’s team getting caught up in a drone spying scandal against New Zealand at the Paris Olympics, their coach, Bev Priestman got handed a one-year ban. To top it all off, FIFA yanked away their 6 points which they earned from winning their first two matches in the Paris Olympic group stage. Canada even tried to appeal to keep those points but unfortunately, that hasn’t gone anywhere either.

On Tuesday, the Canada Soccer Federation made an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) about this deduction penalty. But just hours before their big match against Colombia, CAS’s ad hoc division shot down that appeal. It’s definitely a bummer for the women’s team who had kicked butt and won their first two games but are still sitting at zero points now.

The Canadian Olympic Committee also chimed in with a statement after hearing this disappointing news. The statement wrote, “The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canada Soccer thank the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s Ad Hoc Committee for its expedited process in hearing this case.”

Canada Soccer also expressed frustration about how it turned out: “While we are disappointed in the outcome of our appeal, we commend the players for their incredible resilience and grit over the course of this tournament, and look forward to cheering them on in today’s match against Colombia.”

Have an interesting take?

First, let’s check out Group A before Game 3 begins. Colombia and France are currently leading the table with 3 points while Canada and New Zealand are at 0. For Canada to move on after their last game against Colombia, they need to snag a win; a tie just won’t cut it. As for France vs. New Zealand? If France wins or even draws, it’s good news for Canada since that would put them second in the group based on goal difference.

Here’s another twist to this story. If New Zealand manages to beat Australia, there’s a chance Canada could end up topping the table because they’ve got the best goal difference at the moment! Despite those 6 points taken away from them, things aren’t looking too bad for the Canada Soccer women’s team as they chase that back-to-back gold at the Paris Olympics.

But let’s be real—while everyone is hoping for some exciting gameplay ahead of this crucial match-up, all anyone seems to talk about lately is the drama around their drone spying scandal. Talk about stealing the spotlight!
