The perception of MLS has changed immensely. Major League Soccer was once infamous for being the retirement home for European elites. However, a few names have been key in changing how the public perceived the league. Among many players, the ones that stand out are Manchester United legends, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney. The 6-time Premier League champion shocked soccer fans when he signed for LA Galaxy in 2007, taking a hefty pay cut after moving across the Atlantic.

In return, the MLS was graced with one of the most gifted and marketable soccer talents on the planet. The presence of such a global icon brought more eyes to the league, and also sponsorships. Moreover, Beckham would later go on to form and own the MLS club, Inter Miami CF. Wayne Rooney, on the other hand, spent a season at D.C. United, becoming an integral part of the squad. After a brief stint with Derby County in the 20-21 season as a player and then as a coach, Rooney eventually returned to D.C. United as the head coach in 2022.

The path, which was set by English soccer extraordinaire back in 2007,  is similar to that of Wayne Rooney, if not completely alike. Both former Red Devils have been taking strides in the league, significantly boosting its popularity. Dan Courtemanche, Executive Vice President of MLS, in a talk with Manchester Evening, discussed the impact Rooney has had on the league.

Although the start of this season has been a bit slow for Rooney and D.C. United, fans are expecting the team to bounce back and be able to make it to the final series. Meanwhile, Beckham’s Inter Miami isn’t doing well either, sitting in the second-last spot in the Eastern Conference.
