Many fans feel that it is just a matter of time before soccer takes the front seat in the US. However, there are a few people on social media that just cannot stand anyone that watches the sport.
Do fans think that soccer is a dumb sport?
Famous internet personality David Portnoy recently shared his opinion about soccer on Twitter. Portnoy is a well-known figure in the American sports universe after he established his popular blog, Barstool Sports. Portnoy simply posted a tweet that said, “Soccer is stupid”. Soon after that, the number of Americans that reacted to the tweet highly outnumbered the actual number of soccer fans that tried to defend the sport.
Quite a few Americans left their sour opinion in the comments too. Let’s have a look at how the Americans reacted to Portnoy’s thoughts about the sport.

Many fans didn’t shy away from actually saying what they feel about the sport. They were shocked after reading a comment that said, “Watching players flop around like they just got shot from a toe stub is hard to watch”. However, there were also a few that attempted to have an actual debate. They rightfully asked Portnoy to change the team that he supports.
Portnoy has previously revealed that he supports Tottenham Hotspur. However, the fans believe that his opinion might be a little biased because Spurs aren’t having the best run of form in the Premier League. However, none of these changes the fact that soccer will still continue to rapidly grow in America.

Quite a few well-known American personalities are also deeply rooted in the sport. Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, own Angel City FC, a team in the NWSL. Renowned Hollywood star, Matthew McConaughey is part of the ownership group at Austin FC. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and his fellow actor Rob McElhenney have had a very positive start to their tenure as co-owners of Wrexham AFC.
Without a doubt, there’s a definite rising interest surrounding soccer among Americans. NBA veterans like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and many more have also invested a share of their income in the world of soccer. Towards the end of 2021, Sportico revealed a shocking fact through their yearly viewership report that soccer had beaten the MLB and NBA to the top 100 most-watched sports broadcasts in America during 2022.
