The 2024/25 season could be a trip down memory lane for Manchester City. Remember the club’s iconic fan-favorite maroon away kit in the 2012/13 season? Well, that could very well be the inspiration for City’s third kit next season. Although nothing is set in stone, reports suggest the Umbro-inspired jersey won’t be their only throwback. Turns out, the Sky Blues could reintroduce another iconic kit, one the team sported in its first and only appearance in English soccer’s third tier. While they haven’t looked back since in terms of their performances, PUMA sure is in terms of design.
Manchester City’s 1998/99 away kit was a thing of beauty for many, with its neon and black accents and City blue highlights. And now that it’s rumored to be making a return, fans look to be on board with the idea, with many expressing their delight because a mix of neon and black stripes would carve a jersey for the ages.

FootyHeadlines was among the first to report the recent leaks surrounding the club’s away kit for the upcoming season. According to the outlet, “The new Manchester City 2024-25 away shirt will have a similar colorway to Manchester City’s 98-99 away kit, but Footy Headlines is unclear whether it will have stripes or not.” The kit follows a classic black and yellow design, similar to Borussia Dortmund’s traditional home kit. Next season could be the first time City would sport a yellow and black jersey in a couple of years.
In their 2022/23 campaign, the Sky Blues’ third kit featured a fluorescent yellow base with black horizontal highlights. Launched with the slogan, “Play Forever,” the kit paid homage to Manchester’s street art. As for the iconic 1998/99 away jersey, Nike (City’s then-sponsor) released an away kit inspired by the one from their only third-tier season. It had a black base with thin, vertical blue and neon stripes.
The lead-up to the 1998/99 season isn’t something Manchester City fans look back on fondly. A period of decline that started after the team lost the 1981 FA Cup final culminated with their lowest of lows in the 1998/99 season, as they were relegated to the third tier. However, owing to their performance in that season (and the ones that have followed), the trajectory has only been up for the treble winners.

A look into Manchester City’s kits for 2024/25
While there’s no news about their home kit design, it looks like kit manufacturer PUMA aims to make it a season to remember as far as jerseys are concerned. With everyone almost certain that the third kit would be inspired by the iconic maroon of 2012/13, that’s not all. Per FootyHeadlines, Manchester City will likely have a fourth kit as well.
PUMA will design the kit in collaboration with British singer-songwriter Noel Gallagher. Born in Manchester, he rose to fame as the co-lead singer of the band Oasis, contributing to the band’s influence and success. He’s an avid supporter of the club, so much so that he admitted to crying “like a baby” when City won the 2011/12 Premier League title.
