When Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased Wrexham Association Football Club (Wrexham AFC) back in 2020, they made a statement – Hollywood had its eyes on Welsh soccer. Two years later, the team has become known as the one and only ‘Hollywood FC’, embracing the limelight from the actors’ connection.

Not surprisingly, the connection between Hollywood and Wrexham AFC didn’t stop at Ryan Reynolds. Even before the Deadpool star became the owner, the Hollywood connection was strengthened by another established A-lister and Oscar-winner, Russell Crowe.

Russell Crowe’s connection to Wrexham

It all started when Ryan Reynolds tweeted the news of their purchase of the club back in 2020. Seeing the tweet Crowe responded by revealing his family connection to Wrexham. He wrote, “My grandfather was born in Wrexham,” therefore establishing a Hollywood connection to the club very early in the new era of ownership.

Crowe’s great-grandfather had resided in Wrexham and had twelve children in the city prior to emigrating to Canada in 1925. Eventually, Crowe’s grandfather Frank returned to Welsh town to run a wholesale business. After some time, he emigrated to New Zealand, where he started a new life.

Perhaps Crowe’s touching comment on Ryan Reynolds’ announcement came from a place of sentiment and kinship. It’s undoubtedly clear that with its star power and strong determination, Wrexham AFC has officially become The Hollywood FC. The club is also closer than ever to achieving success in the National League.

Wrexham’s road to success

The Hollywood takeover of Wrexham has consequently made a remarkable transformation in their performance. They are now fighting for the National League title against Notts County, and clawing their way out of the fifth division of the soccer league of England. Currently neck-and-neck with Notts County at 100 points each, they stand second due to goal difference, following a shocking 3-1 defeat to FC Halifax Town.

The next encounter between the two teams is expected to be a must-win for both to win the National League title and earn a promotion to the fourth division. The soccer club is now looking for success, which has eluded them for the past 15 years.
