Now, the “Hips Don’t Lie” sensation is embarking on a journey to her beloved homeland for a compelling reason.

Shakira has enjoyed remarkable achievements in her music career, and these accomplishments will be acknowledged at the forthcoming MTV VMAs. She is slated to be honored with the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, marking her as the first Latin American artist to receive this distinction. Furthermore, she has received nominations in four other prominent categories, including Best Collaboration and Artist of the Year.

In the midst of this, the $300 million rich singer will be flying back to Colombia for a philanthropic reason. Shakira is scheduled to be in Barranquilla this coming Saturday for the inauguration of a large school. This educational institute was constructed in collaboration between the Pies Descalzos Foundation and the Mayor’s Office of Barranquilla. The singer has been invited to cut the ribbon.

Caracol Radio also reports that stringent security measures are currently being put in place in preparation for the event. Remarkably, around $16 million has been splurged on the school which sprawls over an area of 6,000-square-meter. It has 22 standard classrooms, 4 preschool classrooms, two laboratory facilities, art studios, and technology rooms. It also has three sports fields to cater to co-curricular activities. This school project aims to positively impact over 53,000 residents in the vicinity.

Indeed, it’s good to see Shakira take part in such charitable work. Certainly, the people of her country will be delighted to see her inaugurating the school. This philanthropic endeavor also provides a break from her ongoing dispute with her ex, Pique, regarding their beloved children.
