There have been many legendary games in MLS, but the 2018 match between DC United and Orlando City tops the list. Interestingly, today marks five years since the historic game was played. DC won 3-2 against Orlando thanks to a hat trick from Luciano Acosta. However, his 90+6 minutes late winner came through Rooney’s outstanding efforts.
The Manchester United legend sprinted through the rival’s defense toward the half line. He made a challenge that denied the opposition the chance to put the ball into an unguarded goal. Then he quickly curled a long ball into the box, which connected with Acosta’s head. The rest is history. And this goal was recalled by former USA soccer player, Taylor Twellman.

He Tweeted the whole scenario with a caption saying, “I bet you Will Johnson wakes up in his sleep worrying about Rooney from behind.” Notably, Will Johnson is the one who got tackled by Rooney. But coming back to Twellman’s caption, well, it’s quite a witty one. After all, this event deserves this kind of shout-out as it goes down as one of the best plays in the history of MLS.
As for Rooney, there are certainly no words to praise him. While we are out of words for his mind-blowing play, the current DC United manager had some strong words to say for the Saudi Pro League. He insists that the MLS can compete with its financial muscle.

In an earlier interview, Rooney emphasized the significance of Messi’s entry into the MLS. The ex-United figure highlighted that this signing was potentially crucial for American soccer. He contrasted this decision with Benzema and other prominent players who chose to move to Saudi Arabia. He pinpointed, “For the MLS to get Messi was huge. To show that it can compete with obviously the riches of Saudi”.

"The quality is very high here. It's probably a bit disrespected. You get agents phoning & it’s almost an insult some of the players offered — they’re nowhere near ready or good enough to play in the league."
