One such incident in the Turkish Second Division match is currently making news. The game saw fans throwing flares at opposition fans, an ambulance on the pitch, and a fan hitting a player with the corner flag. There were chaotic scenes on the ground, and the match got suspended.

Goztepe vs Altay suspended amidst fan violence

Goztepe S.K. and Altay S.K. clubs based in the city of Izmir, Turkey clashed in the Turkish second division. Altay sits at 11th position and Goztepe at 13th on the table with a game in hand. The emotions among the fans were running high in the derby.

During the match, traveling fans provoked the home fans by throwing a flare at them. A flare hit a fan in the stands, injuring him. The injury was severe, and the ambulance came on the pitch to take the fan to the hospital.

That was the moment when the incident took place. Altay goalkeeper Ozan Evrim Özenç, with his two teammates, was seeing the fan taken towards the ambulance. The Goztepe fan entered the pitch with a corner flag and attacked Ozen twice with a stick from the back.

The fan attacked Ozen twice in the head with a stick that was broken into pieces a second time. Security personnel were quick to react and grabbed the fan. They took the player to the hospital, he suffered a hemorrhage and is stable now.

Previous incidents in the Turkish soccer

There were previous such incidents in Turkish soccer. How can one forget the Kayseri Ataturk Stadium disaster in 1967? The clashes took place between the Kayserispor and Sivasspor fans, resulting in death and injuries to the fans.

Besides this, in 2000, when Galatasaray was due to take on Leeds United in the UEFA Cup semi-finals, violence erupted before the match. As a result of the violence, Galatasaray fans got banned from attending the second leg in England.

In 2012 when Galatasaray played out a goalless draw against rivals Fenerbache and won the title, Fenerbache fans clashed with the Police. Subsequently, Police used the shields to protect the Galatasaray players. Violence was not only limited to the stadium but outside the stadium too.
