Despite being ranked second on FIFA’s official rankings, Belgium failed to make it past the group stages in the World Cup. A draw at the hands of last edition’s runners-up, Croatia, all but confirmed the Red Devils’ exit. Romelu Lukaku missed a few chances for Belgium and faced the fans’ wrath on social media.

However, things could have been different had the star striker taken one of the many glorious chances in the closing stages of the game. The 29-year-old came on as a substitute in the second half to give impetus to his side but failed to put the ball in the net. Thus, after the final whistle, a distraught yet angry Lukaku smashed a glass screen with his fist, which caught the ire of fans on the internet.

Romelu Lukaku displays aggression after full time

At the end of the final group stage game, Belgium crashed out of the FIFA World Cup. While the team didn’t have the best of tournaments, it was Lukaku who was at the center of attention for his agonizing misses.

Head coach Roberto Martinez subbed Lukaku at half-time in the hope of getting the opening goal in the match. With time running out, a tired-looking Croatian team failed to keep Lukaku out of dangerous situations. Yet, a goal would never come, as the former Manchester United and Chelsea main man had a horrendous day in front of goal.

As the players made their way down the tunnel after the game’s conclusion, Lukaku was punching a glass screen with his bare fists in the substitutes’ area. Many have retweeted and liked the clip. Here’s a selection of those tweets.

What happened between Belgium and Croatia at the FIFA World Cup?

Desperate for a change in fortune, the Belgian national team required a victory against Croatia to secure their place in the knockout stage. However, the team that reached the semi-finals in 2018 couldn’t make the most of their chances, crashing out of the tournament in the group stage.

The team bond was put to the sword early on in the tournament, with multiple reports claiming a strong dissent among players in the squad. It ultimately proved pivotal at the World Cup, as the team looked devoid of confidence and it showed on the pitch.
