No one would like to get sent off, especially in their own charity soccer match. But that’s exactly what happened to ex-Arsenal and Bayern Munich player Lukas Podolski who was recently sent off in his own charity match after arguing with the referee.

Podolski made his first debut for the national team in Germany back in 2004 and saw great success with the national team. He went on to win the FIFA World Cup in 2014. Podolski also played with the PL club Arsenal for three seasons.

Why was Lukas Podolski sent off in his own charity soccer match

The 37-year-old now plays for the Gornik Zabrze which recently was taking part in the Schauinsland Reisen Cup against five other teams. This indoors played tournament is played for charity. In the semifinal of the competition, Lucas Podolski dragged the opponent striker down to stop him from scoring.

The referee immediately gave a penalty and a yellow card to Podolski. He was not happy with the decision and started a heated argument with the referee. The referee showed him the red and he was sent off. He still didn’t stop after being sent off and threw water toward the official.

This definitely was not a nice gesture in a match that was for his own charity. As a result of his actions, his teammates had to calm him down. But later he apologized to the referee.

Lukas Podolski is a charitable man

Even though an incident between Podolski and the referee might cause a negative image of this German striker in front of people, he is still a very charitable man. He even has his own charitable foundation named The Lukas Podolski foundation, which helps to provide sports and education for children in socially disadvantaged families.

Even the match was being played to support this foundation. It’s a shame that Podolski had to be sent off due to an ugly argument with the referee. But that doesn’t takes away from the cause that Podolski stands for and wants to help.
