Who would not like to take selfies with Lionel Messi? The Argentine forward is a legend of the sport and is recognized allover the world. Many praise the player, including even the rival teams. One such incident took place after the round of 16 game between Australia and Argentina.

Although the result was not what Australians were looking for, the players fulfilled their wishes after the game when they stopped Lionel Messi outside their dressing room.

Australian players stop Lionel Messi for selfies

Argentina took on Australia yesterday in the round of 16 game for a place in the quarterfinals. The Messi-lead Latin American team beat the Australians by 2-1. Messi opened the scoring in the first half with a brilliantly shot goal. Julian Alvarez added the second in the second half to give a comfortable lead to Argentina. However, Enzo Fernandez’s own goal did provide Australia with a chance for a comeback.

The Australians were not able to pounce on the lifeline given by the own goal and didn’t create any big chances in the last minutes. Argentina hung on and booked their place in the quarterfinals. The moment after the match, where Australian players cornered Messi for selfies, won the hearts of many.

The video that resurfaced after the match saw players waiting for Lionel Messi after the match. Messi, known for his humble nature, stopped by and fulfilled the wish of the players. The reactions of the players saying “Oh My God” after seeing the selfies on their mobiles tell us all.

What’s next for Messi and Argentina?

The win over Australia takes Argentina to the quarterfinals where they will meet the Netherlands. The two times champions will look to go all the way this time around. In 2018, France beat them in the round of 16 and went on to become champion. They came closest in 2014 when they lost to Germany with a solitary goal in the final.
