Video: Argentina’s FIFA World Cup Hero Given an Insane RKO in Debut Game After Record-Breaking $131 Million Transfer

The FIFA World Cup winner with Argentina in Qatar, Enzo Fernandez, got a WWE-style welcome to the Premier League on his Chelsea debut. Argentine soccer star became a record signing in the Premier League with a $131 million transfer to the blues last month. 

He completed a highly anticipated move in the closing hours of the January transfer window. Chelsea owner Todd Boehly was keen on the transfer and got his wish fulfilled. Fernandez was straight away named in the starting lineup by Chelsea for the Premier League game against Fulham on Friday. The midfielder was RKO-ed by the opposition player during the game.

Chelsea, who was 10th in the Premier League table, took on seventh-placed Fulham on Friday. The Blues manager Graham Potter named a strong side for the game with an Argentine star in his starting lineup three days after the transfer. However, a video that surfaced on social media shows Fernandez getting RKO-ed by the Fulham striker Mitrovic in the 11th minute of the game. The midfielder was trying to block the striker with his arms when the incident happened. Fernandez had a decent game on his debut for Chelsea, but their London rivals held them to a draw. 

Struggling Chelsea has made record signings so far this season but has yet to get an array of good results. They are nine points adrift of the top four, and the top four is their real target. It will be interesting to see how Potter copes with the results, as pressure is mounting on the manager to get Chelsea on track for the top-four finish. 

Enzo Fernandez became the record Premier League transfer after completing a $131 million move from Portuguese club Benfica. The transfer saga for the player went on for the whole of January month and ended in the last hours before the window closed. His World Cup performance attracted interest from Chelsea. The Londoners needed the midfielder, and Benfica hold on for the record sum.

Chelsea went berserk in the transfer market since the season started. They exploited a loophole in the FFP to land record transfers and set a record for the highest sum of transfers in one season. Chelsea’s transfer policy was clear from day one that they will provide long-term contracts to the incoming players.

The long-term contracts helped the club to amortize the player values. It helped them in meeting FFP regulations. It drew reactions from other soccer clubs who complained to the UEFA, Europe’s soccer governing body. UEFA decided to curb the contract lengths to a maximum of five years from the upcoming summer transfer window.
