The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 finals drew record-breaking audiences across the globe. However, the same could be said for its performance in the United States. Following the early exit of the USWNT from the World Cup, the viewership in the country took a massive dip in the closing stages of the tournament.

Based on the recent numbers, both Fox Sports and Telemundo saw a massive drop in their viewership. While the global audience soared, numbers in the United States witnessed an all-time low, with viewership dropping by almost 87% in comparison to the 2019 World Cup.

While there could be multiple reasons for the massive dip in viewership. The biggest reason came after the USWNT were knocked out of the tournament following a disappointing campaign. The USWNT who were up against the challenge of to-be semi-finalist Sweden could not hold their ground, as they knocked out on penalties in the Round of 16.

Following the team’s exit, the viewership for the final between England and Spain saw an all-time low in the United States, with both Fox Sports and Telemundo receiving all-time low viewership.

Another reason behind the massive drop in viewership could be credited to the time-zone differences. With the games in the United States starting at 06:00 AM ET. While one could name multiple reasons behind the decline in viewership. The chief cause can be credited to USWNT’s disappointing campaign in the tournament.

USWNT had a terrible World Cup 2023 campaign

While fans were hoping to see the USWNT achieve the hat-trick of World Cups. Everyone was in for a rude awakening. Not only did the side fail to get to the finals, but the performance in the tournament was way below average. While the team started the tournament on a high with a 3-0 win over Vietnam. It went all downhill from there.

The following games against the Netherlands and Portugal saw the USWNT play the games to a standstill. With just a win and two draws in the group stages. The team somehow managed to edge past Portugal into the knockouts but faced a stiff challenge in Sweden.
