Can the USWNT overcome Germany's strong lineup, or are we in for a tough match?

In the blink of an eye, we have reached the Paris Olympics semifinal stage. The first last-four clash sees USWNT locking horns with Germany for the second time in this tournament at Stade de Lyon on Tuesday. Any side that wins this fixture will progress to the finals where they are bound to face the winner of the second semifinal between Brazil and Spain.

This is basically a Group B rematch as Emma Hayes and Co. thrashed the Germans 4-1 on July 28. A brace from Sophia Smith and goals from Mallory Swanson and Lynn Williams were enough to dominate against the European side. Speaking more about the USWNT, they are coming with a narrow victory over Japan in this fixture. Failure of 90 minutes saw Trinity Rodman finally breaking the deadlock in the 105+2 minutes.

Meanwhile, Germany is coming with a win over Canada. They also played 120 minutes of stalemate, eventually succeeding in the penalty shootout with a 4-2 win. Today, either side would be looking to clinch their place in the finals.

Injuries

USWNT

Long-term absentee Jaedyn Shaw finally returned to the 18-player squad after missing the group stage due to a leg injury. Yet, Emma Hayes didn’t find it suitable to give the Portland Thorns star her debut at such a tense match. However, there are still concerns about Tierna Davidson, who will need to be evaluated before the semi-final after missing the last two matches due to injury.

The biggest boost, however, is that Sam Coffey, now available after serving a one-match suspension, is set to return and join Rose Lavelle and Lindsey Horan in the midfield trio.

Meanwhile, there are no injury concerns for Horst Hrubesch and Co. He might be inclined to stick with the same lineup that started the semi-final clash with Canada. Additionally, Kathrin Hendrich and Marina Hegering, having resolved their fitness issues, will continue to operate in central defense for Saturday’s fixture.

Looking at the head-to-head stats and their recent encounter, it’s USWNT who are expected to win the ticket to the finale. However, the Germans haven’t struggled to reach this far only get knocked out easily. They will certainly look to stress out the American ladies. We reckon the score would be USWNT 2-2 Germany until the extra time, but it is Emma Hayes and Co. who will progress through the final round by topping up in the penalties.
