Can the USWNT's experience outshine Brazil's flair in the Paris Olympics final?

Cancel all your plans for this Saturday, August 10! The Paris Olympics 2024 women’s soccer finals are here. The most-awaited game will see the confident USWNT lock horns against South American champs Brazil as both formidable nations look to clutch their hands on the prestigious gold medal at France’s iconic stadium, the very best, Parc des Princes.

USA is coming into the finals by showcasing all the grit and determination to win first place. It all began with a perfect group stage, winning all three matches against Group B rivals, Zambia, Germany, and Australia followed by a narrow victory in the quarterfinal vs Japan. In the previous fixture, Sophia Smith’s extra-time winner vs Germany helped Emma Hayes’ side get the chance to contest for the Gold after the 2012 Olympics.

Meanwhile, Brazil has proved themselves they boast the true spirit of optimism. Unlike the USA, the South American nation’s journey in the group stages was rather eventful. They lost their two group-stage fixtures against Spain and Japan, only clinching three points with a win over Nigeria. They were lucky to make it to the quarterfinals due to their better goal difference than Group B’s Australia.

Meanwhile, the quarter-final saw them knock out host country France with a narrow win, followed by a statement 4-2 win over Spain which was eventually a Group C rematch.

USWNT vs Brazil: Team news

Injuries

USA

Jaedyn Shaw remains the most unlucky player on the USA roster. While the long-term absentee finally returned to the 18-player squad after being sidelined due to a leg injury, she hasn’t played a single minute, despite being available at Emma Hayes’ disposal in both the quarter-finals and semifinals. In fact, it’s unlikely she will get minutes as the former Chelsea boss would likely stick with her usual starting XI and substitutes.

However, there are still concerns about Tierna Davidson, who was substituted by Hayes against Germany just before the start of the latter half by Emily Sonnett as she had missed the last two matches before the semifinal due to injury. Rest, the team remains the same for USWNT.

Brazil

Things went south for Marta after she was sent off in Brazil’s final group stage match against Spain for a dangerous high boot challenge on Olga Carmona. While this saw her get suspended for the quarter-finals, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee further extended her ban, ruling her out of the semi-finals as well. The 38-year-old shall thank her teammate that her last game for Brazil is going to be an Olympic final and not a clash where she got sent off.

Meanwhile, it’s uncertain whether head coach Arthur Elias will have Rafaelle Souza available, as she missed previous games due to injury. Similarly, right-back Antonia remains a serious doubt after sitting out the victory over France with a knock.

Predicted line-ups

USA predicted lineup (4-3-3): Naeher; Fox, Girma, Sonnett, Dunn; Lavelle, Coffey, Horan; Rodman, Smith, Swanson

Brazil predicted lineup (4-4-2): Lorena (GK); Antonia, Rafaelle, Tarciane, Ribeiro, Leal, Vitoria, Sampaio, Jhennifer, Da Silva, Portilho

After the conclusion of the Paris Olympics women’s soccer, there will be two headlines; A fairytale ending for Marta, who hangs up her boot on the international stage with a gold, or the USA rising from the ashes to regain their dominance following a tragic 2023 World Cup. While both are favorites in their own way, we have our money on Emma Hayes and Co. to break the hearts of Brazil. ES reckons the score will be USA 1-1 Brazil, with the American ladies winning their fifth historic gold.
