There are many soccer legends in the USWNT. Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach, and Mia Hamm to name a few. However, Alex Morgan keeps her place on the list with her glittering performances in the last decade. Ever since she stepped foot on the grand stage, she played consistently like no other. Now at 33, she continues to play at a high level, which is a testament to her fitness levels. She plays for the NWSL league team San Diego Wave and leads the team remarkably well.

She made 204 appearances for the USWNT and won the World Cup twice. The US Women’s National Team is blessed to have her grace the soccer pitch with her talents. Likewise, she created various records and produced some of the most iconic moments in the Olympics. There is just no end to her talents. She plays in her iconic jersey number 13 for the USWNT and San Diego Wave.

The sensational forward debuted in 2010 against Mexico in a friendly match on March 31st at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Although she did not get on the scoresheet, the USWNT won the match 1-0. She was 20 back then. Her talents rose to the global audience after she won the Silver Ball at the U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2008. The team won the tournament, and Morgan earned a call-up in 2010, two years after her individual accolade. The game saw heavy snowfall as Morgan made her debut, in front of 3.732 fans.

Alex later recalled how playing in the snow was strenuous and also stated how she never knew to play in those conditions. Moreover, she remembered her first-time experience of playing in the snow. According to The 18, she commented“We ended winning, which was great, and we did snow angels and it was awesome, but I couldn’t feel my feet for like five days after that game.”

The 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup is just around the corner as USWNT aims to lift its third consecutive trophy. Once again, Morgan would be the talisman of the team. Her valuable experience would assist her team in probably her last World Cup. In the meantime, Morgan’s record in the World Cup is extraordinary. In the three World Cups she played in (2011, 2015, 2019), she made 18 appearances and scored nine goals. Likewise, Morgan dished out three assists in her World Cup career.

She won 17 World Cup games in her career and became the Silver Boot winner in 2019. During the 2019 campaign, Morgan and her team won all seven available matches and dominated the tournament.

Olympics triumphs with USWNT

Similar to the World Cup, the Olympics proved to be a significant competition in the history of the USWNT. The golden girl of USWNT made 16 appearances, scored six goals, won one Olympic gold medal in 2012, and won the bronze medal in 2020. In the 2016 Olympics, the team only made the quarterfinals, and the 2020 Olympics saw them ending their campaign during the semi-finals stage.

She won 11 games in her Olympics career and became a crucial player for her team. They will hold the next Olympics in 2024 in Paris after the 2023 World Cup.

There are no players who can finish like Alex Morgan in recent years. Be it a long-range goal, or a predatory finish inside the box, Morgan knows where the goalpost is. She is one of the best finishers in the game, scored 121 goals, and created 49 assists for her national team. It all started during the 2011 World Cup when she announced her arrival on the grand stage.

In two crucial matches, Morgan scored in the semi-final against France and got on the scoresheet again in the final against Japan. Yet, she couldn’t lift the coveted trophy in 2011. Not only that, her passing prowess is recognized when pundits and soccer players talk about her. Morgan is the fifth-highest goalscorer in USWNT history while tied-1oth for most assists created by a USWNT player.

Out of all the weird nicknames people would have heard of, Alex Morgan has a funny one- The Baby Horse! She earned the famous moniker after her teammates gave her when she was 21. The nickname came forward after her long strides on a soccer pitch which resembled a galloping horse. And with those long strides, she arrived in the perfect positions as her off-the-ball movement is extraordinary. Therefore, the nickname suits her playing style, and she continues to play at a high level.

Now 33, retirement talks are heating up for the soccer mom. She has a daughter named Charlie, and the duo shared a close bond. Whenever Morgan plays games, Charlie is her biggest fan. Therefore, if she is to retire, she will do it on her own terms. In an earlier podcast, she explained her intentions of ending her career. According to Just Women’s Sports, Morgan commented“But I think a lot of athletes struggle with leaving their sport. And I do love soccer, but I would be okay leaving it.”
