USWNT’s star attackers Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith are struggling to find the net against Mexico after 45 minutes in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup. Fuelling USWNT’s woe, Mexico’s Jacqueline Ovalle struck in the 38th minute and found the net. Aggravating the already trailing USWNT’s fall, Ovale’s strike shattered the US side’s impressive CONCACAF feat they have boasted over the last 33 games.
The USWNT has not conceded a goal in the last 33 games in the CONCACAF’s official competitions. Jacqueline Ovalle’s late first-half finish broke this iconic record of the 2019 World Champions. In those 33 games, the US team has outscored their opponents 158-0. It is quite unsure if the US stars could outscore Mexico in the match, as they give heavy competition with the same number of goal attempts.

In a move to end their scoring woes, USWNT boss Twila Kilgore brought in veteran attacker Alex Morgan from the bench. Morgan features in the CONCACAF tournament after some drama. Initially, Twila Kilgore left the two-time World Champion out of the USWNT roster, stressing she would give young players more chances in the W Gold Cup.
Later, Kilgore backtracked and called up the San Diego Wave superstar. Alex Morgan notably scored a goal in USWNT’s opener at the tournament. The ongoing USWNT-Mexico clash is decisive for Group A’s rankings, as the winner could finish as the topper in the group table. Either way, with already two wins in hand, the USWNT has qualified for the tournament’s knockouts.

The US team has failed to score back against Mexico after an hour and 20 minutes of action. If the misfiring prevails, Mexico will finish as the group’s leader. Thereafter, they will face the relatively weaker second or third seeds of Group B. If USWNT lags behind Mexico, they will be pitted against the adjacent group’s winner, which will probably be Brazil.
The W Gold Cup will hold its quarterfinals in the forthcoming weekend. The BMO stadium in LA hosts all the quarterfinals. Thereafter, the semifinals will take place on March 06, leading to the final on March 10. This is the inaugural edition of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup. Since the US hosting the tournament, their Women’s team is expected to go all the way and seize the maiden title.
