For Alex Morgan, the past few hours have been quite eventful. The USWNT icon, who was seemingly phased out from the National Team, has gotten an unexpected call-up. The reason was an ACL injury to striker Mia Fishel. However, there is a noticeable difference this time around. Alex Morgan will not be donning her iconic #13 but will be using the #7 jersey. She commented on social media regarding the same, not a wise strategy, considering the backlash regarding her previous social media activity.
In the game against the Dominican Republic, Alex Morgan came on from the bench donning the jersey with #7. Considering that no one was using her previous number (13), fans were amused as to why the USWNT legend didn’t opt for her number. The reason has come into the limelight. As per CONCACAF rules, the replacements for injured players ought to use the number of the player they are replacing. Thus Morgan ended up with Mia’s #7.
This was a weird moment for one of USWNT’s biggest stars. Alex Morgan on X, said, “Yes, this feels as weird as it looks. LFG.” Regardless, the USWNT international will be keen to do what she does best, win games, which she did. She even managed to score a penalty kick in the 92nd minute.

After her late inclusion in the USWNT squad, Morgan was already in the news. Via X, she reacted to the news of her selection with an ‘👀’ emoji. However, it seems she realized that the reaction was uncalled for and deleted the tweet. She followed up with the message, “Not how I would wish to come into camp, but ready to get to work! Praying for a speedy recovery🙏 @miafishel10.”
However, fans were not impressed with the USWNT international at all. Some even labeled this as ’embarrassing’ on her part. On the other hand, Mia Fishel will be heading back to England soon. She will be assessed by Chelsea’s medical team before starting her recovery at Cobham. This injury comes at the worst possible time. The 22-year-old played 3 games for the USWNT and already has a goal under her belt. The Gold Cup was expected to solidify her spot. But, it seems she will have to wait longer.
