It was all dark and gloom following the USWNT’s loss to Mexico. A pundit even remarked that the “USWNT is not what it used to be.” But instead of sulking over the result, the ladies have bounced back in style. In the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup, Twila Kilgore‘s women thrashed Colombia 3-0. As per the boss, the loss in the previous match against Mexico had a huge influence on today’s performance.

In the post-match presser, Twila Kilgore revealed the USWNT’s learnings from the Mexico game. She said, “One of the keys that we identified against Mexico. We want to build…but if they give us an opportunity to play in behind and aren’t prepared to deal with that we’re going to take that and wait for them to adjust and then maybe the game presents different things.” This flexible approach proved to be a masterclass in the end.

Against Mexico, the USWNT had 62% of the possession. But, it was an example of more style over substance. Mexico in that match had double the amount of shots on target (4 vs 2) compared to their opponents. However, against Colombia, Kilgore showcased her tactical flexibility. This time around, Colombia had the lion’s share of possession (56%) but the USWNT was mighty efficient when given the chance. They had a staggering 18 shots, of which 6 were on target.

The goals were scored by Lindsey Horan, Jenna Nighswonger, and Jaedy Shaw. Notably, all the goals were scored in the first half itself and the team opted for a more controlled approach in the second half. While it was a great team performance, there was one player who stood a cut above the rest. And she wasn’t even a part of Kilgore’s initial squad.

USWNT veteran Alex Morgan offers a timely reminder of her class

If it wasn’t an injury for Mia Fishel, then Alex Morgan would not have played in the CONCACAF tournament. Following the World Cup debacle, the USWNT had seemingly moved from the iconic player. Although she didn’t make much of an impact against Mexico, Morgan turned back the clock against Colombia.

It was the kind of performance that you would want from your senior player. Morgan connected the attack, fought hard to win the ball back, and even provided the assist for Nighswonger’s goal in the 22nd minute. With such a display, the coach Kilgore would find it hard to leave her out from the starting line-up against Canada in the Gold Cup semi-final. Considering the USWNT’s plethora of attacking options, Kilgore has a problem that she would be glad to have.
