Days ago, USWNT took one of the biggest decisions. The four-time World Cup champions announced Emma Hayes as their new manager. While the fans continue to talk about this exciting development, congratulations and celebrations have since been extended to the Chelsea manager. In fact, in order to respond to a greeting, she was forced to cut out Pochettino.

Apparently, both Blues’ coaches were having a tête-à-tête at Chelsea’s training ground. Out of all the unexpected events, she received a phone call from none other than Sir Alex Ferguson. The former Manchester United manager had called her to congratulate her on her new journey as a USWNT coach.

While speaking to Athletic, she revealed, “Sir Alex and had a chat last week, he phoned me out there at Cobham but I was in the middle of talking to Poch [Mauricio Pochettino]. So l was torn. Unfortunately, I had to tell Poch ‘wait’.” Surprisingly, instead of letting Poch finish his talk, Hayes cut the former PSG gaffer in the middle to attend to the iconic manager instead.

Be that as it may, it is quite an interesting revelation from the 47-year-old. Also, about making Pochettino wait, it’s quite understandable. After all, it was Sir Alex on the other end. She certainly must have left an indelible mark on him with the latest news. Speaking of which, Hayes made a record in women’s soccer after becoming the USWNT boss.

Hayes creates history in women’s soccer

Upon assuming the role of the new USWNT coach, Emma Hayes has secured the title of the highest-paid coach in the history of women’s soccer. She will be pocketing a $1.6 million salary, equivalent to the salary of USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter. Remarkably, this marks a substantial increase in the salary of a USWNT coach. Earlier, the previous coach, Vlatko, earned $400,000 annually.

Therefore, this fourfold increment in the salary for a USWNT coach is a noteworthy development, and Hayes is the first to benefit from this financial adjustment. Allegedly, Hayes is slated to join the USWNT in May after she wraps up the 2023–24 Women’s Super League season with Chelsea. Till then, Twila Kilgore is currently serving as the interim head coach.
