Just a month after the Copa America concluded, USMNT returns to action for their September friendlies. The Star and Stripes will be locking horns against Canada Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday, September 7. Even though its mere significance is just a friendly, a win won’t harm either side’s case.
USMNT is currently going through a lot. Starting with their form, they endured a poor Copa America, failing to even cross the group stages. While they had clinched victory in their initial match against Bolivia, two consecutive losses against Panama and Uruguay saw the host nation face an early exit from the tournament. Not days had passed the US Soccer sacked Gregg Berhalter. Currently, Mikey Varas is in charge of the American boys as the potential arrival of Mauricio Pochettino is yet to be made official. The former Chelsea, Tottenham, and PSG were touted to make it in time for the September window but delay remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Canada had a not-so-bad tournament. Despite being drawn alongside the likes of Argentina, Peru, and Chile, they made it beyond the group stages. The Cannucks did well in the quarter-finals against Venezuela, winning the penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. However, Argentina sent them home in the semifinals. Hope remained for the third-place match where they faced Uruguay. They did really well by almost winning against the South American nation but the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Sadly, Jesse Marsch and Co. lost the shootout to Marcelo Bielsa and Co. to finish fourth in the Copa America.

USMNT Vs Canada: Team news
USMNT
In the recently announced 24-player roster for September clashes, 18 players were a part of the Copa America group. Speaking of injuries first, Sergino Dest takes first place on the list as he continues to nurse his ACL tear. Next up is Tyler Adams who continues to grapple with back issues, making his Bournemouth stint mar. Another sidelined star would be Tim Weah, who sustained a hamstring injury while in action for the Juventus season opener.

Regarding the absentees who aren’t injured, left-back Antonee Robinson has been allowed some much-needed rest, rather than due to concerns about his place on the team. However, the same cannot be said for Weston McKennie, who has found himself benched at Juventus under new head coach Thiago Silva, even after recently signing a contract extension with the club. Likewise, defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, a regular starter at Celtic, and Miles Robinson, who has had an inconsistent debut season with FC Cincinnati are also left out.
Canada
In the goalkeeping department, Jonathan Sirois from CF Montréal has been called up instead of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Thomas McGill. Other new names include Vancouver Whitecaps defender Sam Adekugbe, Sirois’ domestic teammate Joel Waterman, and Hadjuk Split midfielder Niko Sigur. Additionally, having enjoyed a breakout season with Sporting Kansas City forward Stephen Afrifa also makes his way into the team.
Meanwhile, Watford’s Ismaël Koné, Montréal’s Samuel Piette, Inter Milan’s Tajon Buchanan, and Colombus Crew’s Jacen-Russell Rowe haven’t been called up. Additional left-outs include Fulham’s Luc de Fougerolles and Kyle Hiebert of St. Louis CITY. Despite the key absentees, the roster is strong, considering Jesse Marsch is quite serious about the September window, where his side also faces New Zealand after facing USMNT.
