Let’s recall Mauricio Pochettino’s first-ever presser as the USMNT manager. When the Argentinian tactician was asked about the limited time available to prepare for the World Cup, he confidently responded, ‘Two or three training sessions are more effective’ compared to putting in months of effort. Now for someone accustomed to spending extensive time with players in a domestic setup, this response is quite impressive—but not for Jurgen Klinsmann, who believes things could turn out to be rather ‘tricky‘ for Poch.

“I think it’s a massive appointment; it’s exciting. I’m really thrilled about it. I keep my fingers crossed for him,” described the former USMNT manager while addressing the arrival of the ex-Tottenham boss to the States. However, Klinsmann is concerned about how Pochettino will prepare the American boys with such limited time and less competition ahead of the 2026 event. “It’s not going to be an easy one for sure,” said the former MNT boss while speaking on ESPN FC.

“Not because the expectations are also high. If you go to a World Cup in your own country, it will rock in two years from now, hopefully. He doesn’t have any qualifying games, so it’s tricky because he’s playing pretty much only friendly games,” added the German tactician, hoping that playing the less competitive matches will work out in their favor.

Though Klinsmann highlighted that next summer’s Gold Cup will surely give the US a run for its money, it pales in comparison to tournaments like the Copa America or UEFA Euros, which are far more prestigious and competitive. Yet, the 60-year-old did end things on a positive note as he said, “[Pochettino] He doesn’t have much of highly competitive matches, but I think the appointment is very exciting, and I’m sure that the players are excited as well.”

Moreover, the former Bayern Munich manager claimed that the kind of experience Pochettino possesses both as a player and manager will surely teach the Golden Generation a lot. Then again, it’s not the praise the former PSG manager would be focused on. The stark reminder from Klinsmann will compel the new USMNT boss to brace for the potential impact.

Not to mention, the former Chelsea boss would certainly want to avoid repeating the disaster that unfolded under the last foreign coach—yes, Mr. Klinsmann himself. Fortunately, Poch has already received some advice on that front!

Former US Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard once shared a piece of advice for Mauricio Pochettino if he wishes to avoid a disaster like the previous foreign coach. “The lesson for Pochettino to learn from Klinsmann? Understand the American player. Don’t make it about yourself. Every culture has different nuances—wherever you coach around the world,” wrote Howard in his Daily Mail column.

Adding one’s two cents in this regard was also Landon Donovan, insisting that it’s ‘incumbent’ upon the manager to fully understand the players, culture, and country, while simultaneously integrating all the things in a meaningful way. “You get buying from the players really quickly,” advised the recently hired San Diego Waves manager earlier. Now that Mauricio Pochettino has the necessary to-do list as the USMNT manager, let the game begin!
