Project rebuild has begun for the USMNT. A shocking performance in the recent Copa America 2024, enduring a premature exit within the group stages as a host nation, has ignited a fury inside the Star and Stripes to start from scratch. With that, the first and biggest step was sacking Gregg Berhalter.
Now the biggest problem at their doorstep is to find a new manager to lead Christian Pulisic and Co. Interestingly, hours after parting ways with Berhalter, they made initial contact with Jurgen Klopp. The former Liverpool man is being touted to take charge of the MNT. However, the unfortunate turn of events saw them get rejected by the German tactician, who is keen to extend his sabbatical from the beautiful game.
As they grapple with the refusal of Klopp to take over from Berhalter, might we suggest some other names that USMNT can consider to put an end to their managerial hunt?

Herve Renard
One of the most regarded names in the soccer world, Hervé Renard can be a remarkable signature for the USMNT. Experience, class, and tactical masterclass—the French manager is a mix of everything. He led the Saudi Arabian national team in the 2022 World Cup and has worked with many other nations including Morocco, Ivory Coast, and Ghana.
Currently, the 55-year-old has pledged his alliance with the French Women’s National Team. But his tenure has come to an end recently and isn’t looking forward to continuing.
Notably, the former LOSC Lille boss’ signature can be quite demanding for the US Soccer Federation. It is being said that Renard wants a lucrative contract as he also has interest from affluent Saudi Arabian clubs. Additionally, other nations including Egypt and Nigeria have recently made contact with him for the job.
Steve Cherundolo
This name has been on the table for quite some time. Currently working for MLS side LAFC, the 45-year-old can turn out to be a pretty feasible solution for the USMNT. Though his name isn’t much heard in the soccer world, his achievements will do the job here. Remarkably, Cherundolo has led LAFC to the 2021/22 MLS Cup and Supporter’s Shield.
Additionally, the American coach has been part of three World Cup teams. He has coached the Germany U15 team, the Bundesliga youth side of Hannover 96, served as an assistant coach for VfB Stuttgart, and worked part-time as an assistant alongside USMNT under Dave Sarachan.
Gareth Southgate
Just hear us out for a minute. Gareth Southgate working for USMNT shouldn’t come as a surprise. Though it’s true he is currently figuring out tactics for England, his stint with the Three Lions can naturally come to an end. This could be if his side ends up losing their second consecutive final of the UEFA Euros against Spain.
However, it could turn into a permanent affair between Southgate and England, if they become the formidable side to win the European competition. Of course, it would be silly of the English FA to not let the 53-year-old continue for the FIFA World Cup 2026 with the Euro win. Then, yes, he may stay put with his beloved nation. Otherwise, a door is open for him to take over from Berhalter.
Patrick Vieira
This name doesn’t need an introduction in the soccer world. The former Arsenal legend entered the managerial foray in 2012, having coached Manchester City’s youth sides. A move to MLS was made by taking up the New York City job in 2015 with three years later joining OGC Nice. The 48-year-old was then called up by Crystal Palace for the 21/22 season but left after a season.
Currently, Vieira is back in Ligue 1 and managing R. Strasbourg. He is expected to stay with the club until 2026 but a call from USMNT can change his stance.

Another French mastermind that can solve the existing problems of the USMNT. Given his remarkable playing career, there’s no doubt the 1998 World Cup winner can be a good teacher to this golden generation of USMNT. His guidance can help players like Pulisic, Balogun, and Reyna show their best on the pitch. Rest, there’s no doubting the experience of the 46-year-old.

Aside from having domestic experience with Arsenal Youth, Monaco, and MLS side Montreal, he understands the international front as well. Having worked under Roberto Martinez as assistant coach of the Belgium national team, Henry has also worked for France U-21. Let’s see if a call from USMNT would see him leave his pundit duties.
