Can Jurgen Klopp turn the USMNT into a world-class team, or is this just wishful thinking?

The USMNT has finally taken its first step towards a rebuild. Days after enduring a disappointing exit from the Copa America 2024 group stages, the decision to sack Gregg Berhalter was officially announced today. A day hasn’t passed since they parted ways with the 50-year-old as reports suggest that Jurgen Klopp has already been contacted for the job.

The German tactician’s name has been on the lips of ardent American fans who wish to see him lead Christian Pulisic and Co. According to the Independent, the US Soccer Federation isn’t wasting time and has already approached Klopp to take over from Berhalter. The ex-Dortmund boss is currently off his tactical board, having left Liverpool just last month. Hence, it won’t be a problem for the USMNT to continue the negotiations.

Notably, Klopp’s name has been on the table for the past few weeks. The UEFA Champions League and Premier League title winner has been touted as a ‘dream‘ arrival, with many journalists and pundits favoring the 57-year-old. However, it won’t be so smooth for USMNT just to print his contract and offer him the job.

The final call rests in the hands of Klopp whether he wishes to take up a national team position, something he hasn’t done throughout his managerial career. Furthermore, the iconic manager could require a bigger paycheck, significantly more than what Berhalter received. Either way, if USMNT manages to convince Klopp to join their ambitious project then it will certainly be one of the biggest managerial appointments in their history.

But if things go south, do they have a backup plan?

If not Jurgen Klopp, then Steve Cherundolo is the man for the USMNT job!

Earlier, USMNT insider Doug McIntyre reported Steve Cherundolo, the current LAFC coach, is being considered by the US Soccer Federation to replace Gregg Berhalter. McIntyre noted that while Cherundolo “doesn’t have a ton of head coach experience,” his accomplishments with LAFC, including winning the 21/22 MLS Cup and Supporter’s Shield, make him a strong candidate.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Jurgen Klopp turn the USMNT into a world-class team, or is this just wishful thinking?

Have an interesting take?

In addition to his coaching success, Cherundolo has been a part of three World Cup teams. He has coached the Germany U15 team and the Bundesliga youth side of Hannover 96, served as an assistant coach for VfB Stuttgart, and worked part-time as an assistant for the USMNT under Dave Sarachan. But despite such a good CV, we reckon USMNT fans’ heart says nothing but Jurgen Klopp!
