Inter Miami can take a lot of positives after starting the campaign with a win. After their pre-season tour turned out mediocre, to say the least, the club needed some motivation to get them on track. But still, Lionel Messi’s side has miles to reach the destination, according to a former USMNT star who gave them just a 29.3% chance this season.
The club has definitely made an effort by signing youngsters like Julian Gressel and Nicolás Freire. But their recent performance does not fit well in the books of expert Alexi Lalas. Recently tweeting on X (previously Twitter), Lalas wrote, “After tonight, 29.3%. Miami was slow, sloppy, and unorganized. A half-decent opponent would have taken the countless gifts Miami doled out and pumped 3 by them. Luckily, they were not facing such a team. #MIAvRSL,” claiming Inter Miami was lucky with yesterday’s game.

Having 29.3% chances at the start of the tournament may not mean that the club managed to score two goals against Real Salt Lake, who were not able to cash in on the few opportunities that came their way. The club from Sandy, Utah, just managed two shots on the target in total from 17 attempts. But Lalas feels that David Beckham’s club could find it harder against other teams who may dunk on chances.
On the other hand, Inter Miami looked like it was depending solely on Lionel Messi. The player was the main reason for two of the goals scored while running through the opponents regularly. However, the rest of the team seemed a bit blunt, apart from Paraguayan Diego Gomez, who looked sharp with a strong finish.
Meanwhile, the rest of the squad had been slightly underwhelming in the opener. Luis Suarez is playing with an injury to his legs and has lacked the sting he used to. The new signing, Julian Gressel, missed a few opportunities, leaving questions about the team’s chances ahead.

They lost some key players like Facundo Farias, and the new signing, Freire, hasn’t started yet. There are also plans to land Federico Redondo, who had an impressive pre-Olympic campaign. And with a few youngsters expected to be back in a couple of months, Inter Miami would like to nail the season, proving critics wrong.
