Tim Howard wants Klopp, but is a big-name coach what USMNT truly needs right now?

Has the moment arrived for the US Soccer to change its approach towards the sport? The Stars and Stripes have arrived at a crucial juncture where it can stand as a nation progressing in soccer or one that has a long time to go. The Copa America group stage exit has brought a lot of scrutiny on the unit, but most importantly on the coach Gregg Berhalter. Hence, the fans and experts are looking at a course-correcting maneuver by bringing in Jurgen Klopp who did it with Liverpool. But contrary to popular opinion, a former USMNT star expressed his apprehension about such a move.

Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo America, former goalkeeper Tony Meola feels US Soccer shouldn’t go by name but find a coach who will suit the team. Although not against the move, he stated, “I don’t know who the guy is that can lead this team because it doesn’t always have to be a name,” citing the buzz around Jurgen Klopp.

He continued, saying, “And he’s available. Right? I don’t know that we’re getting a guy like this, but it’s got to be the right guy,” suggesting the right approach should be explored.

Howard earlier stated, “So if I was in charge of US Soccer right now, I’d be on my way to the airport. Why? Because I believe I could make a very compelling argument to Jurgen Klopp to take over the US Men’s National Team.” Other pundits like Alexi Lalas and Rob Stone also echoed the voice. But should he join the USMNT similar to Emma Hayes’ jump to North America?

Reasons for Klopp to join USMNT?

Amid all the discussions, experts sight optimism about acquiring Klopp if Berhalter is sacked. While Lalas feels the talisman could be interested in improving an aspiring team with little pressure, Howard thinks USMNT has a talent pool similar to Liverpool.
