Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is in high demand in US Soccer circles after Gregg Berhalter’s management failed to take the USMNT into the Copa America’s knockouts. While the US Soccer has no plans to sack Berhalter, quite a few veterans think it is high time someone like Klopp replaced the former. Former US goalie Tim Howard even said he would fly to Spain to convince Klopp for the USMNT coaching job. Now, a popular journalist close to the USMNT thinks, US Soccer will find a way to sign the ex-Liverpool boss if he shows interest in joining the American camp.
Jurgen Klopp’s potential USMNT move became the talking point in the latest episode of the State of the Union podcast. Fox Sports reporter and USMNT insider Doug McIntyre said, “They[US Soccer] might not have the money in the bank right now. But if Jurgen Klopp picks up the phone and calls US Soccer and says, ‘I want to coach the USMNT.’ They will find a way to get that money, whether it’s through sponsors, whether it’s through donors.” He added this was a “pie in the sky” situation and US Soccer does not usually spend more than $30 million a year for a coach.

Gregg Berhalter notably earns just above $2 million annually. Klopp on the other hand drew a staggering $26 million paycheck during his Liverpool stint. Hence, it would be a huge surprise if US Soccer would give in to the German tactician’s demands. But McIntyre still thinks the US can’t say no to a Klopp or a Pep Guardiola. “Jurgen Klopp, if it was his dream, or Pep Guardiola’s dream to coach the USMNT. They would find the money to pay either one of these guys,” McIntyre added.
Meanwhile, former US star Alexi Lalas so badly wants Jurgen Klopp in the US camp that, he even snubbed Pep Guardiola for the coaching job!

Alexi Lalas was recently asked to choose between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola to be the next USMNT boss. Lalas outlandishly chose Klopp saying Guardiola is high-maintenance. He added that the Manchester City boss can easily get frustrated when compared to the ex-Reds boss. Lalas’ backing of Jurgen Klopp came shortly after Tim Howard requested US Soccer to let him persuade the German boss.

Klopp took center stage on US veterans’ radar because he once said he would only coach Germany or the USMNT if he moved to a national team. With Berhalter-led US out of the Copa, many think this is the right time for Klopp to step in. However, it is unsure if the German is ready for a new coaching job yet. Even so, as the USMNT insider pointed out, US Soccer needs to go the extra mile to afford someone as big as the ex-Reds boss.
