Adams is right up there in the top list of progressive passes for U-23 midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues. The list contains other superstars like Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona star midfielder Pedri.

USMNT captain is getting recognition

One of the Twitter handles recently posted the stats for the U-23 midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues. One such stat where Tyler Adams is seen is the progressive passes per 90 for the midfielders aged under 23. Adams is in good form for the Premier League side Leeds United who are fighting the relegation battle.

So what exactly do progressive passes mean? FBRef, a website known for soccer statistics, provides data on progressive passes and has defined them. It is a pass that moves the ball 10 yards (30 feet) closer to the opposition’s goal than it’s been recently or any completed pass into the opponent’s penalty area. When we consider a progressive pass per 90, it means the total progressive passes made by the player divided by 90.

Adams boasts 4.53 progressive passes per 90, while Bellingham, who sits on the top of the list, has 5.94 progressive passes per 90. Barcelona superstar Pedri also makes the list with 5.71 progressive passes per 90. Other names on the list include Colombian Moises Caicedo and Morocco’s World Cup star midfielder Azzedine Ounahi.

It will be interesting to see if Adams continues to be on the list by the end of the season. With Leeds United fighting the relegation battle, they will hope for the USMNT captain and other players to step up to get them out of the relegation battle. His compatriot Weston McKennie will help Adams in the midfield after he completed a loan move from Juventus.

The Premier League side will pay a $1.6 million loan fee and have the option to buy the player for $37 million. It will become mandatory if McKennie plays ten games and Leeds stays in the Premier League. Leeds is currently 15th with only one point clear of the relegation zone. They will hope to get a vital three points this weekend to move further away from the relegation zone.
