EA FC24 announcing a women’s TOTY for the first time generated quite the excitement. The results have just been released, and it features Aitana Bonmati along with 3 other FC Barcelona players. Not a big surprise considering that Barcelona Femeni are the current Champions League holders. However, the major talking point has been the inclusion of USA striker Sophia Smith, considering the USWNT’s sub-par Women’s World Cup in 2023.
On the other hand, the 23-year-old has been one of NWSL’s finest performers, recently having been named the MVP in 2022. It looks like her inclusion is a result of her individual exceptional form for the Portland Thorns.

Barcelona Femini dominates the midfield. The superstar pairing of Alexia Putellas & Aitana Bonmati, which has worked wonders for Barcelona & the Spain NT are the advanced midfielders. Interestingly, Aitana & Alexia are among the top 5 rated players in the game, ahead of the likes of Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo! Putellas did have injury issues in the past season but it seems fans have not forgotten her class, Lena Oberdorf from VfL Wolfsburg is the defensive anchor in the midfield.
In the attack, Sam Kerr of Chelsea & Caroline Hansen of Norway & FC Barcelona make up the wing-pairing. They are complemented by US international Sophia Smith, who is the center-forward. Considering the USWNT’s disappointing performance in the WC, her inclusion was not expected and surprised many. However, at the club level, she has performed clinically, having scored 11 goals & 5 assists for the Thorns. Unlike Sophia, a person whose inclusion no debate was Aitana Bonmati. Very few athletes, let alone soccer players, had a better 2023.
Awards continue to flow for Aitana Bonmati
It was just recently that the Spanish star was crowned The Best FIFA Women’s Player in 2023. And for good reason. She contributed immensely to Spain’s World Cup Victory & FC Barcelona’s Champions League triumph. In addition, she had also won the Ballon d’Or, World Cup Golden Ball and was chosen as the UEFA women’s POTY.

She is also the major reason for Barcelona Femeni’s domination, having racked up the league in the last 4 campaigns. Furthermore, her influence was pivotal in the club winning their first Women’s Champions League title back in 2020/21. Her performances have earned worldwide recognition with Pep Guardiola even comparing her to midfield great Andres Iniesta.
