Is U.S. Soccer dreaming too big with Jurgen Klopp, or should they aim for a more realistic target?

Finally, the time has come for USMNT for a streak of tough decisions. The first step has been taken with the sacking of previous coach Gregg Berhalter after a spell of underwhelming performances. Though the decision came after a heavy demand from fans and experts, the challenge ahead seems tougher. As most of the fraternity expects them to sign former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, reports suggest the chances of him arriving could be bleak. Moreover, the US soccer sporting director already has a few people under his target.

According to the latest talks, Jurgen Klopp’s arrival seems a far-fetched idea for the USMNT because of the German coach’s plans. Senior journalist from ESPN FC Jeff Carlisle spoke on SportsCenter saying, “Everybody’s fantasy is Jurgen Klopp you know. He was the Liverpool manager until just recently. He’s taking some time off and usually that means a manager is going to be off the market for about a year so I think. It’s going to be imperative that Matt Crocker look elsewhere.”

This could be a disappointment for fans who were optimistic about US Soccer’s pursuit of him, especially after the departure of Berhalter. The experts noticed several positive signs, particularly regarding Germany’s potential interest in the United States. Earlier information indicated that despite going on a year-long rest, the possibility of Klopp having a national team role was high.

But more interestingly, a report suggested that it was either Germany or the USA in case he wished to take up such a venture. Klopp also revealed his admiration for the USA by wishing it on July 4th and remembering fond memories from his Liverpool tours to the nation in the past. Nevertheless, Carlisle suspects he wouldn’t be available for another year, which leaves Crocker to seek other options.

Who is the USMNT looking after letting go of Gregg Berhalter?

The USA is determined to enter into the 2026 World Cup, being more combative. Hence, US soccer wants to hire a coach with a track record of winning and one who can motivate a young squad proclaimed by the journalist. The names currently doing rounds are Columbus Crew’s Wilfred Nancy and LAFC’s Steve Cherundolo. Both led their respective teams to an MLS title in the last two years. However, Carlisle revealed high chances of Crocker looking for people outside the USA considering his experience in England.

Matt Crocker decided to fire Gregg Berhalter not just for the Copa America group stage mishap but also for their performances in the last 14 matches stated the reporter. Apart from the Nations League triumph, the Stars and Stripes did not meet the expectations in the last year or so.
