Is the US Soccer Federation biased towards the USWNT, or is the USMNT just underperforming?

Over the years, the USMNT has struggled to make its mark on the international stage. Unlike the USWNT, who have dominated their sphere, the men’s team remains the black sheep of the family. Although various factors come into play when judging the success of each team, the U.S. Soccer Federation may be at fault for the men’s lack of success. At least, Rob Stones believes so, urging them to ‘up their game’ for the USMNT by bringing in names like Jurgen Klopp.

As the host nation’s Copa America journey ended within the group stages, the renowned sports commentator outlined what’s next for Team USA. Speaking on the ‘State of the Union’ podcast with Alexi Lalas and David Mosse, Stones said, “Go big or go home. That’s what we do in America. Why should we not be swinging hard for every fence for this country? I don’t think our federation has done that enough. They’re swinging for the women more than they are for the men, to be honest.”

Stones is ‘tired‘ of seeing the federation, focusing more on the women’s project and having left the men’s side to look out for themselves. “I’m happy that they’re fighting for the WNT, but they need to up their game on the men’s side and the obvious place is a manager,” he said. The commentator then mentioned the names of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, who can ‘generate interest.’ Though neither of them has coached a national team before, Stones believes that their personalities would make it a ‘seamless transition.’

He emphasized that Guardiola is attracted to American culture. The Spaniard even has a place in New York and once came to see the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs. Meanwhile, everything is American about Klopp to Stones. However, the Fox Sports presenter has reasons beyond this to see either of them become coaches.

Rob Stones highlighted that the USMNT, one of the host nations for the 2026 World Cup, will bring more opportunities for the new coach. He urged Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola to come and ‘enjoy‘ America for a two-year gig and, in return, the US federation will offer them everything they need to succeed.

“The scene in 2026 is going to be amazing and when you’re done and if you love it, you’ve got a lifetime job here at US Soccer,” he said.

Stones asserted that many are eager to live the American dream with Jose Mourinho used to be one of them. The Special One’s camp was in LA over the years and the commentator added, “He wanted to come to America.”

While it’s often the case for players to get enticed by the opportunity to come to the US, Stones wants this narrative to be for the managers as well and concluded, “It’s easier to do it with a national team than with an MLS team.”
