Spain has made a stunning comeback to world soccer with its Euro 2024 glory. The team hadn’t seen any success since the 2012 European Championships, until last year, when they won their maiden UEFA Nations League title. It appears that they are one of the favorites in the upcoming 48-team World Cup in 2026, thanks to their transformation by coach Luis de la Fuente.
The former Athletic Club manager resurrected their old magic, possibly even enhancing it with precise interplay between the wings and support runners. But now it appears the Spanish coach wants a more competitive matchup with USMNT ambitions to the surprise of American fans.
According to a recent report, the manager’s crew expressed interest in taking up the role of managing USMNT. The report stated that the president of a sports management firm Massoud Roushandel who works with a sports attorney and one of the coach’s advisors confirmed that Fuente’s team contacted US Soccer regarding the role. But, it also suggested that US Soccer has refused to comment about possibilities.

Notably, USMNT is searching for the right replacement for Gregg Berhlater who led them since 2018 with a few months of break in between. The team was knocked out from the group stages of Copa America in their backyard and are desperate to land a leader who can guide them well until the conclusion of the 2026 event, at least.
However, the fans took to the social expressing their lack of hope for such a thing to happen with the Spanish coach.

Fans find reasons why Luis de la Fuente may not arrive at USMNT
One of the main reasons for the fans to be apprehensive about the arrival of Luis de La Fuente is his chance to win the 2026 World Cup with Spain. One reaction made this very clear stating “There’s no way,” because he wouldn’t waste his efforts of ” turning Spain from WC potential in 22 to the dominant team of the Euros,” and miss the shot. Another reaction echoed a similar voice suggesting it was impossible because, “He’s won the euros, why contact anyone?”
There’s no way. He turned Spain from WC potential in 22 to the dominant team of the Euros and instead of seeing them through as the WC favorites he leaves for…. the US????

Game just finished ,how’s this possible. He’s won the euros, why contact anyone?

However, there is a valid reason for such doubt as his winning a World Cup with players of Spain’s quality. The team didn’t fail to win a single game creating a record for Euros. In addition, his contract was recently extended till 2026. Meanwhile, some don’t feel right about his style of play and resources.
One fanatic stated he couldn’t replicate his success writing, “We don’t have Spain’s player pool. ” Another wrote saying, his tactic would be difficult for the USA to approach because of the swift passing and strong midfield tactics he possesses.
Hiring Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, would be a splash, but ultimately, I think it would be a failure.
The reason why is simple…
We don’t have Spain’s player pool.
At all. #usmnt https://t.co/Nk1FXQf5fM

His playstyle wouldn’t suit us, we don’t have the talent or technicality to adapt to it sadly but he would change us and make us better than how we play with useless Berhalter

There is also a feeling that the Euro 2024-winning boss wanted better remuneration from Spain. A fanatic stated, “He’s probably trying to get a bigger payday from Spain. Classic college football tactic.” Nevertheless, a few thought it was okay for the USA to pay him anything for what he brings to the table. It read, “Make an offer whatever he wants. Buyout his Spanish contract, in the office by Friday.” The coach drew around $640,000 till now but is expected to bag around $1.96 with his new contract as per reports.

USMNT faced a few rejections in their attempts to sign experienced coaches. Jurgen Klopp who showed promise of arriving denied the role for his 1-year sabbatical apart from Jesse Mrsch’s refusal. Hence the fans may have been too overwhelmed by the Luis de la Fuente arriving apart from a genuine pragmatism.
Nevertheless, US Soccer will explore all the possibilities of acquiring him as the prospects look bright with the enthusiasm from Fuente’s side.
