Would you defend your family like Darwin Nunez did, or was it too much?

Everything went south for Uruguay tonight during their Copa America semifinal clash against Colombia. Not only did Marcelo Bielsa’s side endure a narrow defeat but star player Darwin Nunez got indulged in a physical altercation with Colombian fans. Matters became worse than ever as Manuel Ugarte’s mother shockingly fainted during the incident.

The PSG superstar’s family was sitting close to where the fight broke out and according to renowned journalist Favian Renkel, the midfielder’s mom passed out. While the fight continued, she was quickly rescued by the medical staff. Notably, the whole incident transpired after the final whistle blew. A group of Colombian fans were drunk and abusing the family members of Darwin Nunez. Other Uruguayan stars close ones were also sitting near the incident that took place.

This forced Nunez to take matters into his own hands and confront the rival group. Videos are surfacing online showcasing the happening as the Liverpool striker can be seen punching them in anger. Security forces including the supporters of both nations tried to calm down Nunez and other Uruguayan stars. However, the brawl kept going for quite a long time as the situation seemed uncontrollable.

Jose Maria Gimenez opens up on the ‘disaster’ involving the families of Darwin Nunez and other Uruguayan stars

During the aftermath of the incident, defender Jose Maria Gimenez cut short his interview with Fox Sports and addressed the violent clash with the Colombian supporters. “They stormed all our families,” he said. “This is a disaster. Our family is in danger. We had to get on the top of the stands ASAP to rescue our loved ones with newborn babies.” Several Colombia fans weren’t letting the players speak during the post-match interview, yet Gimenez adamantly talked about the incident. The Atletico Madrid defender slammed the organizers of the event.

He complained that not a single policeman was there to control the situation, which saw their own families face these consequences. “Our families are suffering because of some who are drunk or have two shots of alcohol, don’t know how to drink, who behave like children and are not decent. I hope that they are careful in the next matches because I don’t want this to happen again,” he concluded. The 29-year-old further warned the authorities, insisting that similar is the atmosphere in almost every match.

Be that as it may, it is certainly quite a grave situation. For now, we hope that Manuel Ugarte’s mother is hopefully in a better state now.
