It’s not often that you get the chance to test yourself against Lionel Messi. The Albiceleste under Lionel Scaloni has been a changed side, with the team putting all on the line during every contest. With the team arguably cementing itself as the best in the world, playing them is a test for anyone. However, despite the chance to pocket a massive $2.5 million, Uruguay NT’s head coach Marcelo Bielsa declined the offer. Is this because of the rivalry? Or is there some other catch behind this?

He took charge of Uruguay, earlier last year. Although he’s been there for less than a year, his philosophy is very visible with their unique brand of soccer. La Celeste is currently placed second with the team just two points behind Argentina in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers.

According to reports, Marcelo Bielsa had rejected the chance to play Argentina in an international friendly. Ex-Uruguayan soccer star Carlos Manta recently spilled the beans over the same. Journalist Buysan stated, “Manta tells 100% Deporte that Uruguay has an offer to play a friendly in March in China. The rival would be Argentina and would imply an economic income of 2,500,000 dollars. Bielsa preferred – due to work time – to play against Morocco in France.” There could be multiple reasons behind Bielsa’s reasoning.

With both teams giving their all, the temperatures usually rise with the Argentina vs Uruguay clashes, which are known for their intense passion. Marcelo Bielsa reportedly instead decided to face Morocco to test his side against a comparatively different style of play.
