The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 ended on a sour note for USWNT forward Megan Rapinoe. As she announced her retirement from international soccer, her final tournament performance was far from dreamy. It was, in fact, lackluster and controversial. The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) failed to advance past the Round of 16 as Sweden emerged victorious in a penalty shootout.
Rapinoe’s World Cup journey, however, was overshadowed by the controversies surrounding her. From her refusal to sing the national anthem to her laughing reaction after missing the penalty, she attracted significant attention both on and off the field. Even former President Donald Trump joined in, making scathing remarks about Rapinoe. Amidst this criticism, the 2019 Ballon d’Or winner is now facing the heat of a popular filmmaker.

The recent personality to join the long list of Megan Rapibnoe’s critics is a popular American filmmaker and activist named Ami Horowitz. During an appearance on Sky News, Horowitz didn’t hold back in expressing his disdain for the OL Reigns forward. Referring to her as “Here’s another ungrateful multimillionaire,” Horowitz condemned Rapinoe for her actions and comments.
One of the main points of contention was Rapinoe and other USWNT players’ decision to abstain from singing the national anthem. Horowitz highlighted the irony of her complaints about America while making millions of dollars and representing the nation on the global stage.
“She made $7 million last year, and here she is complaining about America, saying how terrible this country is, leaning for the National Anthem, swearing she will never sing the National Anthem again,” he remarked. Ami Horowitz isn’t the only one to have called out Megan Rapinoe on the act of not singing the national anthem in the World Cup.
Just a few days ago the popular journalist Megyn Kelly accused Rapinoe of causing division within the team and damaging their connection with their country. These controversies have overshadowed what could have been a memorable World Cup for Rapinoe. Despite the off-field distractions, let’s now examine Rapinoe’s performance on the pitch during the tournament.

Megan Rapinoe’s performance in the World Cup didn’t live up to fans’ expectations, which is unusual considering her past achievements. At 38 years old, she had limited playing time throughout the tournament. In the match against Vietnam, she was substituted in the 63rd minute, and she didn’t play at all in the match against the Netherlands.
In the Portugal match, she came on as a substitute in the 61st minute. Throughout all these appearances, she failed to score or even assist a single goal. Then came the Round of 16 match against Sweden, where Rapinoe was again substituted in, this time in extra time when both teams were tied at 0-0. Unfortunately, she missed her penalty kick during the shootout, marking an unfortunate end to her journey with the USWNT.
