Is Cristian Arango's suspension a fair call, or is MLS being too harsh on its players?

Cristian Arango is making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Recently, news broke that Real Salt Lake star has been suspended for the next four matches over violating the MLS’ anti-harassment policy. However, what comes as surprising is the fact that neither RSL nor the league’s stakeholders have disclosed exactly what led to the striker facing this punishment. This mystery can only be cleared by inspecting the guidelines of these policies.

For those unaware, MLS introduced the anti-harassment policy just after the beginning of the 2024/25 season, in affiliation with the MLS Players Association and Black Players For Change. The main agenda for releasing this policy is after numerous instances of racial abuse between players took place over the past 20 months.

By meticulously planning for 9 months, the MLS aims to eradicate such happenings by “deterring misconduct, achieving both discipline and accountability, and encouraging honesty, growth, and education.”

For instance, whenever an incident takes place, a deep investigation will be conducted. Even the analysis of video and audio recordings, review of official match reports, and interviews with relevant witnesses will also be under check. Not only that, but it also encompasses a wholesome justice approach that includes both the accuser and the accused parties.

In the event of a discriminatory incident, individuals will have the chance to discuss privately their experience with a trained facilitator, who will assess the harshness of the situation and provide suggestions for resolution.

The resolution may include sessions between the alleged offender and the trained facilitator to make the accused person realize the situation and further make amends. However, failure to do so, or in extreme situations would see the offender face consequences, which Arango looks to be facing.
