Inter Milan just secured a 2-1 win over Verona in the Serie A to maintain their position at the top of the league. Controversy, nevertheless, ensued during stoppage time when Inter defender, Alessandro Bastoni made contact with Verona’s midfielder Ondrej Duda using his elbow, which went uncalled by the referee.

The match was leveled at 1-1 before this incident occurred. In the 93rd minute, Bastoni’s actions resulted in Duda falling to the ground, ultimately leading to Inter Milan securing a goal and taking a 2-1 lead. Unsurprisingly, this decision has generated mixed reactions among fans.

Numerous individuals on X have engaged in a conversation regarding the contentious elbow incident. A portion of the fans have expressed their disapproval and have scrutinized the act. One fan even deemed it a UFC-style elbow stoppage.

Another fan expressed frustration with VAR, which has faced numerous criticism for controversial decisions in the past, be it in the European Leagues or even the Saudi League.

Yet another fan simply stated that this was unacceptable and accused players of intentionally finding ways to escape such fouls.

Along with this scrutiny, there is also another group of soccer fans who have come to Bastoni’s defense, asserting that it was not a foul. These fans maintain that there was minimal contact and that it was not an elbow.

One Juventus supporter also spoke on the incident and expressed that it was not a foul at all.

Another fan implored everyone to refrain from creating unnecessary drama and to consider the possibility that it was simply a push rather than an intentional use of the elbow.

The incident has caused a divide among online soccer fans, with strong opinions on both sides. Verona’s Sports Director, Sean Sogliano, has also shared his thoughts on the matter and expressed his discontent with the decision going in favor of Inter Milan.

Despite a VAR check being conducted on the suspected foul, the goal was still allowed to stand. The former Italian player remarked after the match, “It is impossible that the VAR has not annulled it.” In addition, he criticized the officiating, stating, “It is a very serious error.”

This incident bears striking resemblance to a similar situation we witnessed last month in the Nerazzurri’s matchup against Napoli, where Inter’s Francesco Acerbi seemingly made contact with Victor Osimhen’s heels inside the penalty box, but no penalty was awarded by the referee.
