Portugal is acing UEFA Euro 2024 as their spot as #1 is fixed in Group F. The draw for the round of 16 states that the winners of Group F will face the third-placed team from either Group A, B, or C. Since those groups’ standings are also decided, Portugal can face Hungary or Slovenia, since Croatia who finished 3rd in Group B just have 2 points and are knocked out of the tournament.

Of the four best third-placed teams from all the groups being promoted, Slovenia has qualified for the round of 16 finishing with 3 points. Meanwhile, Hungary will need other results to go its way to reach the round of 16. Hungary’s progress will be hampered if Czechia beats Turkiye unless it is by 3 or more than a 3-goal difference. This is because Turkey will finish third with a better goal difference and more goals scored than Hungary. If Turkey draws or beats Czechia, Czechia will not reach three points, taking Hungary through.

Slovenia is less likely to face Portugal with a better goal difference if Hungary qualifies. With a better goal difference than the Group A counterparts, Slovenia will move to the lower bracket and could face the Group E winners, as Hungary will take on Portugal in the upper bracket.

Overall, nothing is easy when it comes to a European Championships, but seems like this UEFA Euro 2024 appears to be a fortunate charm for the 2016 champions. They have landed in a relatively easy group, as three of their opponents are placed among the bottom eight teams of the tournament in terms of FIFA rankings.

However, they will not take anything for granted, with Slovenia pulling off a surprising draw against England, and expect Cristiano Ronaldo to return to scoring ways.
