Gareth Southgate has to be worried about heading into the clash against Slovenia. The manager has been on the back foot with his tactics this Euros. Despite standing on the top of their table, England could lose the top seed qualification if they cannot get a point tonight. Southgate’s team selection could be the talking point, with fans and experts eager to see if the manager sticks with guns and deploys Trent Alexander-Arnold in the midfield.
The defender-turned-midfielder has failed to impress in his new role this summer. His two outings in the midfield against Serbia and Denmark left a lot to be desired. His selection has raised a lot of questions over the English head coach’s selection policy as natural midfielders like Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher continue to sit on the sidelines. Rumors suggest the player could be dropped from England’s lineup tonight.

There is no doubt about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quality. The Liverpool star is one of the best players in the English camp. Only when he plays in his natural position. While Liverpool can afford the player in the midfield, England does not have the team that allows them to do so.
Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer could both fit in the squad in different positions if Southgate tweaks his squad. However, nothing from the English manager suggests he will make that change and with that said expect to see Trent Alexander-Arnold start for the Three Lions tonight.

England Lineup: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier; Gallagher, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Fodem; Kane
How can Gareth Southgate play Trent Alexander-Arnold without jeopardizing his midfield?
Honestly, the answer is pretty simple; Just play the defender in his natural position. While it’s understandable that Kyle Walker is better suited to the right side of the field, having Trent play over Kieran Tripper as the left-back is not a bad shout. This will allow the manager to slot either Conor Gallagher or Cole Palmer in his starting eleven. Gallagher slots straight into the position and could be a brilliant partner for Declan Rice.

Meanwhile, Southgate could also have Cole Palmer in for Trent-Alexander Arnold with a 4-1-2-3 formation. This will allow Palmer to play on the left wing while Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham operate in the center of the field, with Rice as the sole central defensive midfielder. This formation could help England play with their numbers, with 5 men expected to push up at all times. It will be interesting to see what’s on Gareth Southgate’s mind as England takes to the field later tonight!
