In the wake of the tumultuous split between Gerard Pique and Shakira, the Colombian singer has undergone a musical resurgence, channeling the heartache of their breakup into a collection of diss tracks aimed at Pique. In one particularly bold move, she controversially targeted a $2.12 billion brand in her lyrics in a demeaning way. Ironically, it has done the opposite and rather ignited a surge in their sales up to three times.
Following their separation, Pique and Shakira have been embroiled in several conflicts. Even at present, they find themselves unable to escape the ongoing feud, which consistently places them in the public eye.

In one of Shakira’s standout tracks, ‘BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53,’ a collaboration with Argentinean artist Bizarrap, she offered some candid remarks about the ex-soccer star. She even made references to Clara Chia, Pique’s current girlfriend, and her former mother-in-law. In the song, one stand-out line was, “You swapped a Rolex for a Casio.” By this, she referred to herself as Rolex and Clara Chia as a Casio.
While it may be considered damaging to the brand’s reputation, in an unexpected twist, the mention of the watch brand resulted in a significant increase in sales. Toyotaro Hiarishi, the general manager of Casio for Latin America, revealed in an interview with La Republica that the reference to Casio in the song’s comparison with Rolex generated heightened interest in these timepieces.
“There were countries that registered an increase of up to three times more for watches of the brand,” Hiraishi said, as per Marca. “What we observed is that sales exploded the week after the release.” Aside from the increasing sales, Casio’s MD, David Zuazua, revealed that people are supporting the brand in a “don’t mess with my friend style.”
Indeed, who knew a demeaning reference could benefit the brand? While Casio continues to grow their riches, Pique, on the other hand, is grappling with a significant financial setback.
