Dutch international soccer star Quincy Promes is the fresh face of controversies recently. The former Ajax star got two massive setbacks in the space of 20 days. The 31-year-old initially faced accusations of smuggling 3,000-pound drugs to either the Netherlands or Belgium in two shipments. And now, the Dutch Court has sentenced him to a 2020 case of assault.

Promes plies his trade currently in Russia. He rejoined Spartak Moscow in 2021 after his spell at Dutch giants Ajax. Let us take a closer look at the events that resulted in Promes getting the 18 months sentence.

During his Ajax days, Promes found himself in a controversy after the charges of assault on his cousin. The case went to trial in 2021. And it resulted in the Royal Dutch Football Association announcing Promes won’t be a part of the international set-up until Court clears him of the charges. Promes made 50 appearances while scoring 7 goals for the national team. Now the 18-month sentence potentially ends his international career.

In 2020, Promes had an altercation with his cousin. It resulted in Promes stabbing his cousin in the knee. The Spartak Moscow star always denied the charges, but the Dutch Court found sufficient evidence to charge him. The former Dutch international received a custodial sentence of 18 months after testimony from two eyewitnesses. Along with eyewitnesses, the Court also had his telephonic conversations.

The Dutch international is currently in Russia and didn’t appear for the trial on a single date. This drew criticism from the judge. If Promes would have appeared for the trial, the sentence would have been 6 months lesser. However, Promes was lucky to get charged only for assault and not attempted murder, after stabbing a cousin. Apart from the prison sentence, Promes will have to pay $7,635 to the victim.

It is unclear whether Promes will come to the Netherlands again. He has a chance to appeal against the verdict, and it remains to be seen whether the former Sevilla man appeals. Meanwhile, he is in line to face another trial that may start at a later date regarding the drug trafficking allegations.

Quincy Promes faces another trial

The Public Prosecutions Service accused the 31-year-old recently of bringing 3,000 pounds of cocaine in two batches to the country in 2020. Police intercepted the two batches in Antwerp in 2020. The trial will take place in his homeland, and it seems the former Ajax forward will again remain absent, as he is playing in Russia.
