David Beckham was under fire for his involvement in the FIFA World Cup Qatar. He has signed a multi-million dollar deal to promote the tournament and the lifestyle in Qatar. As per the deal, David Beckham appeared in several promotional videos. In one of them, he talked about his life and career with his former teammate, Gary Neville. In the piece he said that he is still ready to come on the ground if someone asked him to play, stating England will retire players like him, but he wouldn’t retire from England.
However, he also reminisced about an incident after the 1998 World Cup, in which he was heavily criticized by a media person.

David Beckham was sent off the field as the referee handed him a red card for kicking Diego Simeone on the leg. The decision impacted and England went on to lose the knock-out match of the 1998 World Cup on a penalty shoot-out.
David Beckham remembers being “absolutely abused”
After the match against Argentina and getting knocked out of the tournament, Beckham went to New York. He told Neville, “I went to New York,.. my wife was there, victoria was there, so I was going to meet; because she was on obviously a world tour, so I went to meet her. It was probably the worst place I could have gone just because the media was just a nightmare from the moment.. We went to the world cup on the Concorde and then we arrived back on the Concorde…”
He also talked about his return to Britain when he was heckled by one of the tv reporters. He said, “I remember getting back, and I remember walking through the airport and being absolutely abused by this one tv reporter saying how I’d let parents down...” Beckham then talked about he took some days off and then joined his club for practices.
Beckham added that the abuse didn’t stop for at least 4 years. And this wasn’t an isolated incident.

Beckham on Soccer vs football debate
Beckham is very active in the ongoing FIFA WC 2022 and attended the group stage match between USA and England. Taking a jab at the football vs soccer debate, he presented his views. He posted a picture of him from the Al Bayt stadium captioning, “It’s called FOOTBALL, U.S. Soccer.. Great atmosphere at Al Bayt Stadium between US fans 🇺🇸 and England fans tonight”.

The match, however, ended as a goalless draw. Regardless of it, England will face Senegal in their round of 16 matches.
