Looks like Canada WNT won’t be tempted away easily to throw the towel in the Paris Olympics 2024. The Canucks clinched a dramatic 2-1 win over France in their second group-stage match, courtesy of a late goal from Vanessa Gilles. As ardent fans buzz with ecstasy, Canada’s MNT star Jonathan David also joined the celebrations by sending a succinct four-word warning to the rivals after recently facing a 6-point deduction over a shocking drone spying scandal.

The LOSC Lille star looks to be celebrating his nation’s ladies from his home. It became evident after David took to Instagram stories and shared the clip of Gilles’ winning goal. He can be heard shouting in anger and joy to see his comrades win the game. Additionally, he wrote a caption saying, “They tried to stop us 😤😤.”

Seems like this was CanWNT’s way to respond to the cheating allegations, which cost them a lot. Aside from facing points deduction, technical and assistant coaches Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander were sent home, with Lombardi even facing an 8-month prison sentence. Additionally, head boss Bev Priestman also forced herself out of the dugout from the New Zealand clash, but the Canadian girls did well, clinching a 2-1 win.

They repeated the scoreline in today’s game at Geoffroy-Guichard, St-Etienne. Though France was ahead within the first throughout the first half, the latter 45 minutes saw the Canucks make a brilliant comeback. Jessie Fleming scored the equalizer just minutes before the hour mark with Vanessa Gilles scoring the winner in the 90+12 minutes. In fact, the hero of the match had a message for the soccer world after the shocking incident that dragged them into the negative limelight.

Match-winner hunter Vanessa Gilles gets emotional over ‘cheater’ claims

The post-match interview saw Lyon superstar burst onto the scene while addressing the conditions they had to go through. “Heck we have nothing to lose, we haven’t slept in the last three days. We haven’t eaten, we’ve been crying. I wouldn’t say their ideal performing situations but we’ve held each other through it and we’ve had absolutely nothing to lose. What’s given us energy is each other, is our determination,” she said.

Gilles insisted that it is Canada’s pride to not just prove people wrong ‘when all this sh*t is coming out about‘ their values as Canadians. “We’re not cheaters. We’re a damn good players, we’re a damn good team and we’re a damn good group and we proved that today,” concluded the 28-year-old. Notably, today’s win sees Canada successfully pay their 6-point debt. They now stand at third with nil points and a win in the next fixture vs Colombia will be a bonus.
