Ryan Reynolds has become a household name in Wales, but not because of his acting skills. The Deadpool star came together with Rob McElhenney in 2020 and made a bid for the world’s third-oldest club. They took over the Welsh club Wrexham AFC in February 2021 for $2.5 million. Since then, the duo has invested not only in the club but also in the betterment of the community.

The county council recognized the contribution of the Hollywood duo and conferred them with freedom of Wrexham honor. They decided to give them the award last year in December. Wrexham owners received the award hours before the crucial game against Notts County.
Ryan Reynolds astounded by the award
Wrexham AFC co-owner was happy to receive the honor from the Wrexham county council. It is the county’s top civic honor and was awarded in the ceremony recently. The duo attended the ceremony before going to the Racecourse Stadium for the title-defining Notts County game.
“I think back to that first moment. We were on Zoom speaking to the Wrexham Supporters’ Trust and I don’t think I have ever been as nervy as I was in that exact moment,” Reynolds spoke at the event. “I’m so touched I get to be a part of this story,” he added.

Reynolds also said, “I know that we are here so that you guys can thank us for some reason, but I feel like it is the other way around. We want to thank you for what you have given us. Words are too clumsy to quantify what it means to me.” The club co-owner, McElhenney, also shared his feelings after receiving the award.
The duo then witnessed the magical game at the Racecourse Stadium. The heroics of Paul Mullin and the last-gasp penalty save from Ben Foster gave the Red Dragons a vital win in the title race.

The Vanarama National League title is getting interesting. With three games to go, Wrexham AFC leads the points table with a point. Wrexham needs six more points from the remaining three games to ensure the title and the automatic promotion to Football League Two.
Notts County has two games to play compared to three of Wrexham, giving the world’s third-oldest club advantage. The recent disappointing draw against Barnet for the Red Dragons reduced the gap at the top after Notts County won their game. The fate of Ryan Reynolds’ club is in their own hands now.
