Despite the 1-0 scoreline, Manchester United were thoroughly beaten by Newcastle. The Red Devils are not enjoying the best of seasons as they sit dangerously close to a UCL group exit. Their league performances haven’t been too convincing either and club legend Paul Scholes has lashed out at Erik ten Hag’s side after the match at St James Park. The Englishman doesn’t seem convinced by the attitude of the players.

Ten Hag has already had to deal with the Jadon Sancho saga and now is not in the best of relations with center-back Raphael Varane.  Hence, It does seem like Scholes has a point regarding the player attitudes.

Legendary English midfielder Paul Scholes did not hold back in his analysis of United’s performance. He told Premier League Productions, “Rubbish. They’re a poor football team at the moment, aren’t they? Those results they’ve had recently are misleading.” He also identified the player’s attitude as a reason for their performances. Scholes said, “Too many lazy players on the football team – you can’t get away with that. Going to these places, the first thing you do is work hard.”

Moreover, Scholes also seemed to admit that the United full-backs were not given any help defensively. He explained, “You can see the joy that Newcastle are getting down both sides and feel sorry for the fullbacks.” Also, it seems that Scholes wants more defensive contributions from the wing duo of Rashford and Garnacho. While Garnacho has been impressive in recent games, Rashford has had quite an ordinary season for a player of his caliber. It seems Scholes too has been disappointed by the winger’s recent performances.

Scholes delivers brutal verdict on Marcus Rashford’s performance

Rashford switched positions and was playing on the right flank against Newcastle. Yet, he didn’t find much joy and was substituted in the 61st minute. The former United midfielder revealed that Rashford was doing more harm than good. He also didn’t seem to appreciate the body language of Rashford while being substituted.

Rashford had received a lot of criticism for not tracking back. Ten Hag too was cryptic in his response to Rashford’s performance despite backing him to return to form.  Perhaps, this might be the lazy attitude that Scholes was referring to.
