The Portugal national soccer team is ending 2023 on a high. After a shocking exit from the 2022 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo’s side has qualified for the 2024 Euros. But before entering the new year, the President of the Portuguese Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes, may have dropped a hint about retirement recently.

Over the years, the Portuguese soccer team has not only excelled in men’s soccer but also seen improvement in women’s soccer and the overall development of the sport. The achievements over the years can definitely make the Portuguese soccer boss proud.

President of FPF hints about his future

Fernando Gomes is the President of the regulatory body and also UEFA Vice President currently. But the 71-year-old, who has stated that he will stay till 2027, has probably hinted at a possible retirement. Gomes recently said, “I was elected as a member of the FIFA Executive Committee until 2027, so I will be there. I am not young anymore. I can rest a little now. I have been working continuously for 54 years and have never stopped, and I think it is also time to rest a little.”

 

Gomes took office in December 2011, when he was first elected as the president of the regulatory body. After that, Gomes also served as a member of the FIFA Council. But now the administrator is looking for some rest after 54 years of continuous work in various professions. He previously worked with former Champions League winner FC Porto in higher positions from 1992 to 2010.

Over the years at FPF, he saw the Portugal national men’s team win the 2016 Euro under Cristiano Ronaldo. Under him, the women’s team qualified and played in the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time this year. They also made their debut in the Women’s Euro in 2017. In addition, the nation also saw titles won in futsal and beach soccer, apart from the UEFA Nations League title. However, the focus will now be on the upcoming target.

Cristiano Ronaldo enters an important 2024

Amid all that has been achieved, Portugal will still aspire for more. Cristiano Ronaldo will head to Germany in 2024 as one of the favorites, not losing a single game in the qualifiers. The captain, who played a record 200 games for the country, will now embark on a momentous journey to win the navigators their second title in eight years.

On the whole, the Portuguese soccer president’s vision has been impeccable. Stating to be clear in values, Gomes said that the FPF will always believe in transparency, feminism, and defending the weak and vulnerable, apart from the sport’s interests.
